Membership is available in one of the City's pension systems to all New York City employees, depending on the civil service title of the employee. All employees holding a permanent civil service position in the competitive or labor class are required to become members within certain specified times of their date of appointment, but may voluntarily elect to join the system prior to their mandated membership date. All other eligible employees have the option of joining their allocated system upon appointment or at anytime thereafter. The appropriate membership procedure is described in the sites of each of the pension systems.
